About Executive Function

What are executive function skills?

Executive function skills are brain-based skills and refer to a variety of top-down mental processes including working memory, inhibition, attention, planning, self-monitoring, self- regulation and task initiation (Goldstein & Naglieri, 2014). EF comprising both cognitive and emotional components, play a crucial role in the regulation of goal-directed behaviour (Fernandez et al., 2014). These skills take at least 25 years to reach full maturation.

Executive function skills are life management skills which all of us need to be effective in planning, initiating and achieving daily goals at home, in school and at the workplace. These skills are trainable and coachable with time and the right tools.
